A book used for Christian faith education. In English, catechism (from the Greek catechein, meaning oral instruction) explains doctrine to candidates for baptism and believers. Famous works include the Didache from ancient times, and after the Protestant Reformation, Luther's Larger and Smaller Catechism, the Geneva Catechism, the Heidelberg Catechism, and the Roman Catechism (commonly known as the Catholic Catechism). Various versions are still in use today.

キリスト教の信仰教育に供される書物。英語ではカテキズムcatechism（ギリシア語カテケイン〈口頭での教示〉に由来）。受洗志願者や信徒に教理の解説をするもので，古くは《ディダケー》，宗教改革以降はルターによる《ルター大小教理問答》，《ジュネーブ教理問答》，《ハイデルベルク教理問答》，《ローマ教理問答》（通称《公教要理》）などが有名で，現代でも種々の版が用いられている。
