Year of death: September 16, 1096 (October 4, 1096) Year of birth: 1030 A nobleman and calligrapher in the late Heian period. He was the son of Yukitsune and the grandson of Yukinari, one of the three great priests. He was appointed Gon Chunagon, Dazai Gonsouki, and Shonii, but was demoted and suspended from his post for being involved in smuggling with Khitan during his term as Dazai Gonsouki. He was also asked by Emperor Shirakawa to make a copy of the imperial anthology Goshui Wakashu, but was angry that only one of his own waka poems was included, and refused to make a copy. The only surviving signed calligraphy by Ifusa is the "self-written request" (among the Todaiji documents), but recent research has led to the conclusion that volumes 3 and 7 of the "Maedahon Hokuzansho," "Ai-shihon Manyoshu," "Jugoban Uta-awase," and several other vestiges of calligraphy are believed to be his own. His unique style of calligraphy, elegant and full of spirit, is unique in contrast to the elegant ancient calligraphy that is unique to the Heian period.
