The idea that stars evolve has been around since the 19th century, and was called the contraction theory of Kelvin and Helmholtz. In other words, as a star loses its energy in the form of light, it contracts due to its own gravity (the force of gravity), changing from a giant star with a large radius to a dwarf star with a small radius. However, theories of the internal structure of stars began to develop in the first half of the 20th century, and around 1940 it was discovered that the source of energy for stars is nuclear reactions, and the path of stellar evolution was rewritten to one from dwarf stars to giant stars.
