Konponji Temple

Japanese:
Konponji Temple

One of the 44 temples of the Nichiren sect in Niibo-Oono, Sado City, Niigata Prefecture. The mountain name is Tsukaharayama. In 1271 (Bun'ei 8), Nichiren was exiled to Sado, and in November of the same year, he entered the Sammai-do in Tsukahara through the snow. From then until April of the following year, he fought hunger with the help of Abutsubo and his wife, deepened his awareness as a practitioner of the Lotus Sutra, defeated various sects (Tsukahara Mondo), and wrote "Kaimokusho". In 1552 (Tenbun 21), Daisenbo Nissei founded Konpon-ji in Tsukahara, where he was exiled, and later, in the early Edo period, it was also called Seikyo-ji (Sado-shi), but there are different theories about the location of Tsukahara. The entire temple grounds are surrounded by dense old trees, and the site of the Sammai Hall is signposted to the left of the mountain gate.
