Born: June 22, 1763, Givet, Ardennes
[Died] October 18, 1817. Paris. French composer. He studied under J. Edelman and composed a cantata based on the text of J.-J. Rousseau in 1782. Influenced by C. Gluck, he composed more than 40 operas and opéras comiques between 1887 and 1822, making use of dramatic expression and orchestral effects. He also left behind piano sonatas, chamber music, and orchestral music, and is known for composing the national anthem of the French Revolution, "Les Marches le Sacredes". His main work is the opera "Joseph" (1807).
