Kisaku Ito

Set designer. Born in Kanda, Tokyo. Graduated from the Western Painting Department of Tokyo School of Fine Arts. Became a member of the Hijikata Yoshi Model Stage Research Institute while still a student, and after "Julius Caesar" in 1925 (Taisho 14), he was responsible for the set design of many productions such as "En no Gyoja" and "Odera School" based at Tsukiji Little Theater, contributing to the dawning new theater world. In particular, in the field of new theater, he established stage sets using realistic techniques, such as his representative work "Yoake Mae". From the early Showa period, he also moved into commercial theater, leaving behind a huge record of production in all fields such as Kabuki, Shinpa, opera, and film. After World War II, he participated in the founding of Haiyuza Theatre Company, and became a member of the Japan Art Academy in 1964 (Showa 39). His main works include "Stage Set Research," "Thirty Years of Stage Sets," and "Stage Sets." His older brother is dancer Michio Ito, and his younger brother is stage director Koreya Senda.

舞台美術家。東京・神田生まれ。東京美術学校洋画科卒業。在学中より土方与志(ひじかたよし)模型舞台研究所同人となり、1925年（大正14）の『ジュリアス・シーザー』以後、築地小劇場を本拠地に『役(えん)の行者』『大寺(おおでら)学校』など多くの舞台美術を担当し、黎明(れいめい)期の新劇界に貢献。とくに新劇の分野で代表作『夜明け前』など、写実主義的手法により舞台装置を確立した。昭和初期から商業演劇にも進出、歌舞伎(かぶき)、新派、オペラ、映画などあらゆる領域に膨大な製作記録を残している。第二次世界大戦後、俳優座の創立に参加、64年（昭和39）芸術院会員となる。主著に『舞台装置の研究』『舞台装置の三十年』『舞台美術』などがある。兄は舞踊家伊藤道郎(みちお)、弟は演出家千田是也(これや)。
