Maritime Technology and Safety Bureau

The organization is made up of the Minister's Secretariat, seven bureaus, and four external bureaus. The bureaus are the Transport Policy Bureau, which is responsible for formulating and promoting comprehensive land, sea, and air transport policies and plans, international transport-related affairs, and tourism administration; the Railway Bureau, which is responsible for trunk railways, urban railways, and railway safety; the Road Transport Bureau, which is responsible for automobile transportation such as buses, hire cars, taxis, and trucks, and automobile safety; the Maritime Traffic Bureau, which is responsible for domestic and international shipping; the Maritime Technology and Safety Bureau, which is responsible for ship and seafarer administration; the Port and Harbor Bureau, which is responsible for port construction and management; and the Civil Aviation Bureau, which is responsible for general aviation administration, airport construction and management, and aviation safety. The external bureaus are the Japan Coast Guard, the Japan Meteorological Agency, the Seafarers' Labor Commission, and the Marine Accident Tribunal.
