An evergreen fruit tree of the family Carpinaceae cultivated in the tropics and subtropics, it reaches a height of 5-6 m, has sharp thorns, and its branches tend to droop. The leaves are alternate, lanceolate or ovate, leathery, 11 cm long, with no or slightly toothed edges, and fine hairs on the underside. It is dioecious, and the flowers are small and green, growing on the shoots of the previous year, but the female flowers are axillary. The male flowers grow in clusters in umbels. The fruit is spherical, about 2 cm in diameter. The stalk is about 0.8 cm long, the skin is chestnut purple, velvety, and beautiful in appearance, reminiscent of a large grape berry at first glance. 熱帯や亜熱帯で栽培されるイイギリ科の常緑果樹で,高さ5~6mに達し,鋭いとげを有し,枝は下垂しやすい。葉は互生し,披針形ないし卵形で革質,長さ11cm,縁には鋸歯がないかまたはわずかに歯牙があり,裏面に細毛がある。雌雄異株で花はいずれも小さくて緑色,前年生の枝梢(ししよう)に着生するが,雌花は腋生(えきせい)。雄花は散形花序に群生する。果実は球形で径約2cm。果梗は長さ約0.8cm,果皮は栗紫色のビロード状,外観は美しく,一見大型のブドウの果粒を思わせる。
