An evergreen fruit tree of the family Carpinaceae cultivated in the tropics and subtropics, it reaches a height of 5-6 m, has sharp thorns, and its branches tend to droop. The leaves are alternate, lanceolate or ovate, leathery, 11 cm long, with no or slightly toothed edges, and fine hairs on the underside. It is dioecious, and the flowers are small and green, growing on the shoots of the previous year, but the female flowers are axillary. The male flowers grow in clusters in umbels. The fruit is spherical, about 2 cm in diameter. The stalk is about 0.8 cm long, the skin is chestnut purple, velvety, and beautiful in appearance, reminiscent of a large grape berry at first glance.
