Damping

Japanese: 制動 - せいどう（英語表記）damping

The act of damping by applying a resisting force against motion or vibration. Elements used for braking include automobile and bicycle brakes that use friction, dashpots that use the viscous force of a fluid passing through a narrow gap, air brakes that allow air to flow in and out, and electromagnetic brakes that use eddy currents. The damping of vibrations is sometimes called vibration damping in particular.

運動や振動に逆らう抵抗力を作用させて，それらを減衰させること。制動に用いられる素子には，摩擦力を利用した自動車や自転車のブレーキ，狭いすきまを通る流体の粘性力を利用したダッシュポット，空気を流出入させる空気制動子，渦電流を利用した電磁ブレーキなどがある。振動の制動を特に制振ということがある。
