The act of damping by applying a resisting force against motion or vibration. Elements used for braking include automobile and bicycle brakes that use friction, dashpots that use the viscous force of a fluid passing through a narrow gap, air brakes that allow air to flow in and out, and electromagnetic brakes that use eddy currents. The damping of vibrations is sometimes called vibration damping in particular. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
