A Muromachi period tale. Author unknown. Possibly written in the early 14th century. The story is based on a military tale, in which the evil Muhon Mumyo-o beguiles all living beings and confines them to the prison of birth and death, so King Hossho Shinnyo has Shakyamuni, Amida, and other Buddhas attack Mumyo-o's castle and force him to surrender. The story shows influences from works such as Prince Shotoku's Biography in terms of concept and expression. The Kuno-ji Engi, which has a colophon dated 1342 (Kokoku 3, Kōei 1), has the title Mumyo-hosho Kassen Monogatari (Tale of the Battle of Mumyo-hosho), which suggests that it was told by a blind monk, just like The Tale of the Heike.
