A Soto Zen monk from the mid-Kamakura to the Nanboku-cho period. He led the development of the Soto religious sect, centered around Sojiji Temple in Noto (Ishikawa Prefecture). He was born in Noto. He became a monk at the age of 16 at Mount Hiei and studied Tendai doctrine. In 1297 (Einin 5), he visited Keizan Jokin for the first time in Kyoto and debated him, and two years later he returned and became his disciple. In 1306 (Tokuji 1), he attained enlightenment at the age of 32. In 1324 (Shochu 1), he became the second head priest of Sojiji. He later moved to Eikoji. He produced many outstanding disciples, including Taigen Soshin and Tsugen Jakurei, known as the "Twenty-Five Philosophers of Gasan," and formed the mainstream of the religious sect. He developed the five ranks of Zen thought that was rejected by Dogen. 鎌倉中期から南北朝期の曹洞宗の禅僧。能登(石川県)総持寺を中心として曹洞宗教団を発展に導いた人。能登の生まれ。16歳で比叡山で出家し天台の教学を学ぶ。永仁5(1297)年,京都で初めて瑩山紹瑾を訪ねて問答し,2年後再び参じて弟子となる。徳治1(1306)年,32歳で大悟する。正中1(1324)年,総持寺2世となる。のち,永光寺に転住した。「峨山の二十五哲」と称される太源宗真,通幻寂霊ら優れた弟子を輩出して教団の主流を形成する。道元が排した禅の五位思想を展開した。伝記に『峨山和尚行状』があり,著書に『山雲海月』がある。<参考文献>田島柏堂『峨山韶碩禅師』
