This refers to processing to make flammable or combustible fibers less flammable, and is also called flame retardant processing or flame retardant processing. In the case of chemical fibers, flame retardancy is often achieved by mixing and spinning flame retardants. In general, chlorine, bromine, phosphorus, boron, etc. are known as flame retardant elements, and substances containing these contribute to flame retardancy to a greater or lesser extent. Fireproofing processing of cellulose-based fibers has been most widely studied, and flame retardancy can be achieved simply by impregnating the fibers with phosphates or boric acid, but this effect is lost by washing. Representative permanent flame retardant processing agents that react and bond with cellulose include N -methyloldimethylphosphonopropionamide (Pyrobatex CP) and tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium salts (THPC and THPOH).

易燃性，可燃性の繊維を燃えにくくするための加工をいい，難燃加工，防炎加工ともいう。化学繊維の場合は，難燃剤を混合紡糸することにより難燃化することが多い。一般に，塩素，臭素，リン，ホウ素などは難燃性の元素として知られ，これらを含む物質は，大なり小なり難燃化に寄与する。セルロース系繊維の防火加工は最も広く研究されており，リン酸塩やホウ酸などを含浸しただけで難燃性が得られるが，洗濯により効果が失われる。セルロースと反応して結合する永久難燃加工剤としては，N‐メチロールジメチルホスホノプロピオンアミド(ピロバテックスCP)や，テトラキス(ヒドロキシメチル)ホスホニウム塩(THPCおよびTHPOH)が代表的である。
