A narrative poem based on Greek mythology by the English poet J. Keats. It consists of 4,050 lines in 4 volumes and was published in 1818. In the first volume, Endymion, the young lord of the kingdom of sheep farmers at the foot of Mount Latmos, dreams of Cynthia, the moon goddess, and sets out on a journey in search of her. The second and third volumes depict wanderings underground and under the sea, incorporating the tragic legends of Venus and Adonis, Alpheus and Arethusa, and Glaucus and Scylla. In the fourth volume, the protagonist falls in love with an Indian girl and is torn between his love for the heavens and the earth, but he discovers that the Indian girl is actually an incarnation of the moon goddess, and ascends to the heavens with the goddess. It is interpreted as an allegorical story showing that the pursuit of ideal beauty is fulfilled by the pursuit of real beauty. Keats himself famously described this work in the preface as "more of a feverish attempt than an accomplished task." J. Lyly and B. Disraeli also have works with the same name.
