Haiphong - Haifon (English spelling)

Japanese: ハイフォン - はいふぉん(英語表記)Haiphong
Haiphong - Haifon (English spelling)

A port city in northern Vietnam. With a population of 581,600 (estimated in 2003), it is the third largest city in the country after Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. It is located 90 km southeast of the capital Hanoi, at the confluence of the Thai Binh River, the Cua Cam River, and the Tam Bac River, and is located in the northeastern Tonkin Delta, 25 km upstream from the mouth of the river. It was just a small village about a century ago, but it has developed rapidly since the French colonial period and has become an important city as a gateway to Tonkin and Laos. The city area consists of four districts: Hong Bang, Go Keng, Le Can, and Kien An, eight suburban districts, and one town area. The main industries are cement and machinery in the Den Hai and Ha Long districts, and shipbuilding, glass, and canned fish in the Bach Dang district. The port is seven meters deep even at low tide, and 4,000-ton ships can dock, but at high tide, 10,000-ton ships can dock. The railway line runs to Hanoi and Lao Cai, and the expressway connects it to Hanoi, Hon Gai, etc. During the Vietnam War, it was heavily bombed by the US Air Force.
