Indonesian culture dates back to the BC era, and in the early period, the Bronze Age culture from China was introduced, and after the Christian era, Indian culture was introduced. The Srivijaya Kingdom flourished in Sumatra from the 7th to 11th centuries, and Buddhist and Hindu art developed. This art also influenced Thailand and Cambodia. Javanese culture began in the early 8th century, centered on the Dieng Plateau in Central Java, and art influenced by Sumatran art developed under the Sailendra Dynasty that emerged later. Representative examples of this period include the magnificent Buddhist and Hindu architecture and sculptures at Borobudur and Prambanan around Yogyakarta. After the 10th century, the center of culture shifted from central to eastern Java. The ruins of Singasari and Mojokerto date back to the 15th century. After the 15th century, the art of both religions that had flourished until then was destroyed by the invasion of Islam, and the center of culture moved from Java to Bali, where its traditions were transmitted. In addition, Buddhist and Hindu sculptures have been discovered on both the islands of Sulawesi (Celebes) and Borneo. Other famous crafts include Javanese batik (dyed chintz).

インドネシアの文化は紀元前にまでさかのぼり，その早い時期には中国からの青銅器文化，紀元後になるとインド文化が流入した。7～11世紀頃スマトラ島にシュリービジャヤ王国が繁栄し，仏教美術とヒンドゥー教美術が展開した。この美術はタイ，カンボジアにも影響を与えた。ジャワ島の文化は中部ジャワのディエン高原を中心に8世紀初め頃から始り，その後興起したシャイレーンドラ王朝により，スマトラ島の美術の影響を受けた美術が展開した。この時代の代表的なものとしてジョクジャカルタ周辺のボロブドゥール，プランバナンなど，仏教，ヒンドゥー教の壮麗な建築や彫刻がみられる。 10世紀以後は中部から東部ジャワに文化の中心が移った。シンガサリやモジョケルトの遺跡などが 15世紀までのものである。 15世紀以後にはイスラムの侵入でそれまで栄えた両宗教の美術は破壊され，文化の中心はジャワ島からバリ島に移り，その伝統が伝えられた。なおスラウェシ (セレベス) ，ボルネオ両島にも仏教，ヒンドゥー教などの彫刻が発見されている。その他ジャワ更紗 (バティック) などの染織工芸品も有名である。
