...(3) A hardened ferruginous weathered crust, or hardpan, found in the tropics, consisting mainly of bauxite and hydrous iron oxide. To avoid such conceptual confusion, today the material originally called "laterite" by Buchanan has been redefined as plinthite (from the Greek word plinthos, meaning brick), and the term laterite is now used exclusively to refer to hardened plinthite. In connection with this change in the concept of laterite, the meaning of lateritization and lateritic soils has also changed.
