A marine fish of the family Ophidiidae in the order Perciformes (illustration). It is widely distributed in central and southern Japan, from the western Pacific Ocean to the Indian Ocean. It is known locally as Uminamazu in Tanabe, Wakayama Prefecture, and Okinamazu in Kochi Prefecture as a mixed name with other species, which is said to be due to the six barbels on each side of the snout. It is also known as Tabera and Donko in Tokyo Bay, Bikunin in Fukuura, Kanagawa Prefecture, Morohige on Hachijo Island, and Shingyobo in Onahama. It reaches a total length of 60 cm. The head and body are nearly cylindrical, but the tail is thin on both sides. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
