A plain stretching along the Sea of Japan downstream of the Koyoshi River in the southwest of Akita Prefecture. It is bordered to the north and east by the Sasamori Hills and to the south by the Chokai mountain range. It is a coastal plain formed by sand dunes that have accumulated on top of the Tertiary hills. A pine forest that served as a sand-control forest and was planted during the Edo period continues on the coast, and inside these are orchards and farmland. The sand dune area in Nishime Town, Yurihonjo City in the southwest was opened up to settlers after World War II. The alluvial land on the inside has been converted into rice paddies and produces high-quality Honjo rice, making it a leading rice-growing area in the prefecture. There is much farmland along the Koyoshi River, and settlements are located on the natural levees.
