Mori Shuntou

A Chinese poet from the late Edo and Meiji periods. His given name was Lu Zhi, his pen name was Xi Huang, he was commonly known as Kofu, and his pen name was Shuntou. He was the son of Mori Ittori, a doctor from Ichinomiya, Owari (Aichi Prefecture). He initially studied medicine, but was not pleased, and instead studied poetry under Washizu Masui, and was known as a peer of his fellow student Onuma Makurayama. He later went to Kyoto, where he became acquainted with Yanagawa Seigan, and developed his poetic name. In 1874 (Meiji 7), he went to Tokyo and established the Jasmine Society, which welcomed many talented poets, including important figures in the Meiji government, and opened its doors to the Edo poetry world, nurturing many disciples. In 1875, he also launched the monthly Shinbunshi, which is considered the first magazine specializing in Chinese poetry, and contributed to the rise of Chinese poetry in the Meiji period. 幕末明治期の漢詩人。名は魯直,字は希黄,通称は浩甫,号は春濤。尾張一の宮(愛知県)の医者森一鳥の子。初め医を学んだが喜ばず,鷲津益斎に詩を学び,同門の大沼枕山と共に双璧と称された。のち上洛して梁川星巌の知遇を得て詩名を現した。明治7(1874)年には東京に出て茉莉吟社を興し,明治政府の要人をはじめ実力派の詩人たちを擁して江戸詩壇に広く門戸を張り,多くの門人を育てた。また同8年には漢詩専門雑誌の嚆矢とされる月刊の『新文詩』を創刊,明治漢詩の隆盛に寄与した。清詩の影響を受けた艶麗な詩を得意とし,『春濤詩鈔』『岐阜雑詩』などの詩集がある。<参考文献>『明治漢詩文集』(明治文学全集62巻),入谷仙介『近代文学としての明治漢詩』
