A city in the center of the Shimokita Peninsula, Aomori Prefecture. In 1959, it was incorporated as Ominato Tanabu City, and was renamed the following year. Located in the center of the peninsula, the city is located at Ominato, the terminus of the Ominato Line, overlooking Tanabu and Ominato Bay. The tertiary industry accounts for 70.6% of the population (2005), and it plays the role of a consumer city with the Shimokita region as its commercial area. The primary industry population is low at 6.6%, and dairy farming, lumber farming, and scallop, kelp, and wakame farming are carried out. The western part is the mountainous area of ​​Osoresan, and is included in the Shimokita Peninsula Quasi-National Park. Japan's first nuclear ship, the Mutsu (8,242 tons), which was based at Sekinehama, was dismantled in June 1995 and converted into the marine geological research ship Mirai. In March 2005, the towns of Kawauchi, Ohata, and Wakinosawa in Shimokita County were incorporated. The Great East Japan Earthquake caused damage in the city: 864.16 km2 . 61,066 people (2010).

青森県下北半島中部の市。1959年市制,大湊田名部(たなぶ)市となり,翌年改称。半島の中心に位置し,田名部と大湊湾に臨む大湊線の終点大湊に市街がある。第3次産業人口が70.6%(2005)を占め,下北地域を商圏とする消費都市の役割を果している。第1次産業人口は6.6%と少なく,酪農や製材,ホタテガイ・コンブ・ワカメの養殖が行われる。西部は恐(おそれ)山の山地で,下北半島国定公園に含まれる。関根浜に母港が置かれていた日本初の原子力船〈むつ〉(8242トン)は,1995年6月解体され,海洋地球研究船〈みらい〉に改造された。2005年3月下北郡川内町,大畑町,脇野沢村を編入。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。864.16km2。6万1066人(2010)。
