Kamikaze-go

Japanese: 神風号 - かみかぜごう
Kamikaze-go

A domestically produced two-seater high-speed communication plane that set an international record for a domestically produced aircraft on a Tokyo-London flight in 1937 (Showa 12). Many record-breaking flights were made during the development of aircraft in the 1930s, and this was one of them, planned by the Asahi Shimbun Company. It departed from Tachikawa (Tokyo) on April 6th and arrived in London on the 10th (Japan time). It flew 15,357 km in 94 hours, 17 minutes, and 56 seconds (actual flight time 51 hours, 19 minutes, and 23 seconds). The crew consisted of pilot Iinuma Masaaki (1912-1941) and engineer Tsukagoshi Kenji (1900-1943). The model was the Mitsubishi Shikarigane type, and the name Kamikaze was chosen from 4.74 million votes. The same type of aircraft was later adopted by both the Army and the Navy as the Ki-15 Type 97 Command Reconnaissance Aircraft, and over 500 were produced. It had a wingspan of 12 meters, a total length of 8.5 meters, a weight of about 2 tons, a 550 horsepower engine, a maximum speed of 480 kilometers per hour, and a range of 2,400 kilometers.

It successfully flew from Tokyo to London with an actual flight time of 51 hours, 19 minutes and 23 seconds, landing at 11 locations along the way. It was then used for reporting and contact flights, but was eventually lost after making an emergency landing near Taiwan .
