al-Khalifa (English spelling)

...The oldest surviving inhabitants are said to have been Arabs who came from Iraq during the reign of Nebuchadnezzar II in the 6th century BCE. From 1521 to 1602, it was occupied by the Portuguese, but then came under the control of the Iranian Safavid dynasty, and in 1783, the Utb tribe from the Arabian Peninsula regained Arab control, and the al-Khalifa family has ruled it to this day. The Khalifa family are Sunni, but today 75% of the population is Shiite.
