Round planthopper (English name) Gergithus variabilis

Japanese: マルウンカ（英語表記）Gergithus variabilis

Order Hemiptera, suborder Homoptera, family Ophiopogonidae. Body length (to wing tip) 5.5-6mm. Overall brown, almost hemispherical, with extremely rounded forewings. Head is short, with a pair of square depressions at the top. Pronotum is also short, and dark brown along with the scutella. Elytra (forewings) vary in color, with some turning entirely black. Hind wings are small, and they cannot fly. They live on various broad-leaved trees, and are distributed throughout Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Taiwan. (→ Homoptera, Hemiptera )
