Mutsu

Mutsu
[1] = Michinoku (Mutsu) [2] One of the eight provinces along the Tosando road. In ancient times, it was the Ezo region, and until the 9th century, the Emishi occupied half of it. After the Taika Reforms, the whole area north of Shirakawa became Michinoku (Michi no Oku) Province, and in the Ritsuryo system, it was written as Mutsu Province, and later read as Michinoku or Mutsu. In 712 , the Sea of Japan side was divided into Dewa Province. In the late Heian period, the Abe, Kiyohara, and Fujiwara clans held real power, and in the Kamakura period, it was under the jurisdiction of the Oshu Sobugyo, and in the Muromachi period, it was under the jurisdiction of the Oshu Tandai, and later the Kanto Kanrei. During the Sengoku period, various clans such as the Date and Nanbu clans fought each other, but after Toyotomi Hideyoshi's pacification, in the Edo period, it was divided into the large domains of Morioka, Sendai, and Aizu, and other small domains. In 1868 , it was divided into five provinces: Iwaki, Iwashiro , Rikuzen, Rikuchu, and Mutsu. In 1871, after the abolition of feudal domains and the establishment of prefectures, it became part of Akita Prefecture and four prefectures: Fukushima, Miyagi, Iwate, and Aomori.
