A perennial plant of the legume family. It is also called scutellaria or eboshigusa. It is found in various parts of Japan, as well as in eastern Asia and the Himalayas, and commonly grows in roadside grasslands and riverbanks. It has also naturalized in North America, where it has become a weed. The stems are green and grow in clumps, either erect or creeping on the ground. The leaves are small, stalked, trifoliate, and compound. The leaflets are obovate, entire, and about 1 cm long, with a pair of stipules at the base of the petiole that are the same size as the leaflets. From spring to summer, flower stalks emerge one after another from the leaf axils, and bear 1 to 3 small bright yellow butterfly-shaped flowers each. The fruit is a linear pod that twists when ripe.
