Miyako Dance - Miyako Dance

A dance gathering for geisha from Gion, Kyoto. It began in 1872 (Meiji 5) with choreography and instruction from Inoue Yachiyo III, and is performed exclusively in the Inoue-ryu style of Kyomai. It is the oldest dance gathering for geisha and geisha, and later became the source of similar dances in geisha districts such as Tokyo and Osaka. It was suspended for six years due to World War II, but was revived after the war and held at the Minami-za for three years, and has since been held every year at the Kaburenjo Theater in Gion. It is held from April 1st to the last day of the month, and has become a tourist attraction in Kyoto.

京都の祇園(ぎおん)の芸妓(げいぎ)たちの舞踊会。1872年（明治5）に3世井上八千代振付け・指導に始まり、京舞井上流のみによる。花街、芸妓の舞踊会としてもっとも古く、のちに東京、大阪をはじめとする花街に同類の舞踊を生む源となった。第二次世界大戦のため6年間中断、戦後復活し、南座で3年間行われた以外は、毎年祇園の歌舞練場(かぶれんじょう)で催されている。4月1日から末日までで、京都の観光の名物になっている。
