The trademark name of an American cola drink. The name comes from the fact that the main ingredients are an extract of coca leaves and cola nuts, but the exact ingredients and manufacturing process are kept secret. It was created in 1886 by John S. Pemberton, a pharmacist in Atlanta, Georgia, as a tonic. It is said that the unique flavor was discovered when he accidentally diluted it with soda water instead of water. Pemberton sold the concentrate to drug stores and soda fountains, but after spending $74 on advertising in the first year, he made $25, so he sold the business for $1,750.
