…German zoologist. He conducted research trips around the world to study plants and animals, and wrote many enlightening books. His father, Christian Ludwig B. (1787-1864), was a famous ornithologist, so he became interested in ornithology. After studying at the universities of Jena and Vienna, he wrote The Life of Birds (1861), which explained the fascinating ecology of birds in a simple and scientific manner. His large-scale work, Illustrated Animal Lives (6 volumes), published between 1864 and 1869, became a huge bestseller, due in part to the boom in zoos at the time, and was read by readers around the world. …
