Bulletproof vest - bulletproof vest

A special vest worn to protect the heart and other parts of the chest, mainly against handgun bullets. It is also called body armor. The vest currently used by Japanese police officers when arresting gun-wielding criminals is a thin steel plate measuring 40.5 cm long, 71.5 cm wide, and weighing 5.5 kg, covered with cloth, which covers the front and sides of the chest, but the vest used by the military and police in the United States is made of multiple layers of a special nylon fiber called "Kevlar," which can protect against everything from handgun bullets to short rifle bullets, and military helicopter pilots use it from the torso to the buttocks.

主として拳銃(けんじゅう)弾に対して、心臓その他胸部を守るため着用する特殊のチョッキ。ボディ・アーマーともいう。現在日本の警察官が銃器をもつ凶悪犯人を逮捕する場合などに使用しているものは、縦40.5センチメートル、横71.5センチメートル、重量5.5キログラムの薄い鋼板を布で覆ったもので、胸部の前・横を覆うが、アメリカで軍用や警察用に使われているのは、「ケブラー」という特殊ナイロン繊維を何枚も重ね合わせたもので、拳銃弾から短小銃弾まで防げるので軍用ヘリコプター操縦士は胴部から臀部にまで使用している。
