A town in Abuta County, Hokkaido. Located at the southern foot of Mt. Yotei, in the upper reaches of the Shiribetsu River, the town began to be developed in earnest in 1902. Farming is centered on field crops, and canning of the town's specialty asparagus is also popular. Nakayama Pass is on the eastern border, and it is on the tourist route from Sapporo to Jozankei to Lake Toya. Area: 189.41 km2 . Population: 2,490 (2010).
