…In the mid-19th century, when realist painting was on the rise in France, attempts to reinterpret the traditions of 17th-century painting with new sensibility and technique finally began to emerge in the Netherlands. Jongkind, a pioneer of Impressionism, stayed in France and preferred to paint the landscapes of his homeland, and in the Netherlands, painters of the Hague School, including the Maris brothers, Hendrick Johannes Weissenbruch (1824-1903), and Jozef Israels (1824-1911), assimilated the influence of the Barbizon School and left behind clean, lyrical landscape paintings mainly in gray tones. However, the greatest painter of the 19th century must be Vincent van Gogh, who ended his short but dramatic life in France. …
