Sadayo Tatewaki

Women's liberation activist and researcher of modern Japanese women's history. Born on June 7, 1904, to a small landowner in Kakeya Village, Iishi County, Shimane Prefecture (now Unnan City). Graduated from Matsue City High School of Home Economics in 1920 (Taisho 9). After three years as a substitute teacher, she moved to Tokyo, where she studied while working in a cafe and selling natto. She met members of the Shinjinkai, married a member of the same association, Akira Orimoto (1900-1954), and entered the social movement. In October 1927 (Showa 2), the National Women's Alliance was formed and she became its secretary-general. In August 1929, she opened a women's labor school in Kameido, Tokyo, for female spinning factory workers, where she worked in education, supported the Western MOS strike in 1930, and joined the Communist Youth League in 1931, during which she was arrested in 1932 while working underground. After converting and being released from prison in 1934, she began researching women's history. She was arrested again in 1944. After World War II, she became involved in writing about women's issues and women's history, and served as its representative committee member after the New Japan Women's Association was founded in 1962 (Showa 37). Her most notable works include "Problems with Working Women in Japan" and "Japanese Women."
