Edo Culture

...The period following the Azuchi-Momoyama period. It refers to the 265 years from 1603 (Keicho 8), when Tokugawa Ieyasu became Shogun, to 1867 (Keio 3), when the 15th Shogun, Tokugawa Yoshinobu, returned the government to the Emperor and stepped down as Shogun. During this period, the Shogunate, the center of power, was located in Edo, so it is called this period, but since the Tokugawa clan held power, it is also called the Tokugawa period. In addition, the period from 1590 (Tensho 18), when Toyotomi Hideyoshi unified the country, to 1867, which is the period of the Azuchi-Momoyama period, is now widely considered to be the Early Modern period because the ruling system was the Shogunate-han system.
