A raised coral reef in the western Pacific Ocean, part of Palau. It produces copra, tapioca, etc. The Spanish arrived in 1543. It was a Japanese mandate territory from 1918 to 1944, and was the site of a fierce battle between the US and Japan in September 1944. It covers an area of about 12 km2 .
