A fish of the family Cobitidae. It is a general term for the Kamurchi and the Taiwanese loach (also called Laihi). The former is native to the Amur River in the north and the Yangtze River in the south, and the latter to Taiwan, southern China, and Vietnam. Both are over 50 cm long, have a long, cylindrical body, a large mouth, and eyes near the tip of the nose. Their body color is yellowish gray with scattered dark brown spots. They live in shallow ponds and reservoirs in the plains, and can survive for long periods outside of water by breathing air. They were introduced to Japan from the end of the Meiji period to the beginning of the Taisho period, and the Taiwanese loach mainly breeds in the Kinki region, while the Kamurchi breeds in other areas. They are disliked because they prey on other useful fish. Their flesh is white and delicious, but it is dangerous to eat them raw because they are intermediate hosts for the spiny gnathostome. In recent years, they have become popular targets for lure fishing. → Related topics Naturalized animals Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
