〘Noun〙 (The noun derived from the conjunctive form of the verb "negu (labor)". "Negi" is an ateji character. → Additional note on "negu (labor)")① A priest who served at Ise Grand Shrine and other shrines in the past. They ranked below the Shinto priest and above the Hafuri . It is also generally used as a general term for priests. 〘名〙 (動詞「ねぐ（労）」の連用形の名詞化。「禰宜」はあて字。→「ねぐ（労）」の補注)① 昔、伊勢神宮以下、各神社に奉仕した神職。神主の下、祝(はふり)の上に位した。また一般に、神職の総称としても用いる。伊勢両宮では、大宮司・少宮司の下に各々一〇人の禰宜および大内人・物忌などがいて奉仕した。※続日本紀‐天平勝宝元年（752）四月戊戌「詔授_二〈略〉伊勢大神宮禰宜従七位下神主首名外従五位下_一」② 現在、伊勢神宮および神社本庁管轄下の全国の神社に置かれる神官・神職の一つ。宮司・権宮司の下、権禰宜の上に位する。伊勢神宮では、大宮司・少宮司のもとで祭事を行ない事務をつかさどる。※官報‐明治二〇年（1887）三月一八日「宮司は奏任の待遇を受け、禰宜、主典は判任の待遇を受く」③ 昆虫「ばった（飛蝗）」の異名。〔和漢三才図会（1712）〕
