A group of islands scattered between Sulawesi and the western end of West Irian in eastern Indonesia (known as the Maluku Islands in Indonesia). Historically known as the Spice Islands. The main islands are Halmahera, Ternate, Tidore, Belu, Seram, and Ambon. The group forms Maluku Province, with its capital being Ambon on Ambon Island. Since ancient times, the islands have been a source of nutmeg, cloves, and other precious spices, and were the subject of competition between Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands, and Britain. After the Ambon Incident in 1623, the entire group of islands came under Dutch control. Today, the spice trade has declined, and instead, oil field development is underway on Seram Island and elsewhere. Area: 77,870 ^km2 . Population: 2,571,593 (2010).

インドネシア東部，スラウェシと西イリアン西端との間に散在する諸島（インドネシアではマルクMaluku諸島と称する）。歴史的には香料諸島として知られる。ハルマヘラ，テルナテ，ティドール，ブル，セラム，アンボンなどが主要島。マルク州を形成し，州都はアンボン島のアンボン。古代からニクズク，チョウジその他貴重な香料の産地で，ポルトガルとスペイン，オランダ，英国の争奪の的となった。1623年アンボン事件を経て全諸島がオランダ支配に入った。現在では香料貿易は衰え，代わってセラム島などで油田開発が進んでいる。７万7870km²。257万1593人（2010）。
