A group of islands scattered between Sulawesi and the western end of West Irian in eastern Indonesia (known as the Maluku Islands in Indonesia). Historically known as the Spice Islands. The main islands are Halmahera, Ternate, Tidore, Belu, Seram, and Ambon. The group forms Maluku Province, with its capital being Ambon on Ambon Island. Since ancient times, the islands have been a source of nutmeg, cloves, and other precious spices, and were the subject of competition between Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands, and Britain. After the Ambon Incident in 1623, the entire group of islands came under Dutch control. Today, the spice trade has declined, and instead, oil field development is underway on Seram Island and elsewhere. Area: 77,870 km2 . Population: 2,571,593 (2010). → Related topics Indonesia | Treaty of Tordesillas | Banda Sea | Malay [Archives] Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
