Minamigawa [village] - Minabegawa

Japanese: 南部川[村] - みなべがわ

A village in Hidaka County, central Wakayama Prefecture. Population 6,663 (1995). The Nanbu River originates at Toragamine (790m) on the eastern edge of the village, on the border with Nishimuro County, and flows southwest through the center, combining with many tributaries, and is surrounded by mountains and hills. The area to the neighboring Nanbu Town area to the south was the land of Nanbu Manor from the end of the Heian period to the Middle Ages. Agriculture and forestry are the main industries, and the Nanbu plum grove on the terraces along the Nanbu River is said to be the number one plum production area in the country, along with Nanbu Town. At the end of the Edo period, Haneta (Nanbu Town) was known as the number one plum production area, but eventually Oshine, Taniguchi, Kumaoka, and other local areas became the main producers.

和歌山県中央部，日高郡の村。人口6663(1995)。村域の東端，西牟婁（にしむろ）郡との境にある虎ヶ峰(790m)に源を発する南部川が，多数の支流を合わせつつ中央部を南西流し，周囲を山地や丘陵に囲まれる。南隣の南部町域にかけては，平安末期から中世には南部荘の地であった。農林業が中心で，とくに南部川沿いの段丘にある南部梅林での梅の生産は，南部町とともに全国一といわれる。江戸末期には埴田（はねた）(南部町)が第1の産地として知られたが，やがて当地の晩稲（おしね），谷口，熊岡（くまか）などが中心となった。
