A Russian archipelago located in the southwestern Bering Sea, about 200 km east of the Kamchatka Peninsula. It belongs to Kamchatka Oblast. It consists of Bering Island, Medny Island, and several other small islands. It covers an area of about 1,848 ^km2 . Geologically, it is a volcanic belt that runs through the Aleut Islands. The highest point is 751 m above sea level. It is covered by tundra, and is inhabited by Russians and Aleuts, producing sea otter furs and other products. It was discovered in 1741 by an expedition led by Bering (commander), and its name commemorates Bering's death at sea.
