...The flowers are about 3cm in diameter and reddish purple. Other species cultivated include L. coronaria Desu. (native to Europe), L. chalcedonica L. (native to Siberia; English names: Maltese cross, scarlet lychnis, Jerusalem cross, scarlet lightning), L. pendula L. (illustration), L. coeli - rosa Desr. (rose-of-heaven), and L. haegeana Lem. (a hybrid of Ezo lychnis and Matsumoto lychnis) (illustration). There are several species of Lychnis (English name: campion) that grow wild in Japan. The most representative of these is L. miqueliana Rohrb. (illustration), a large perennial plant often found on the edges of deciduous forests. Its stems grow upright, reaching heights of 50cm to 1m, and its nodes are swollen and dark purple.
