...Nguyen Phuc Anh, a member of the southern Nguyen clan, had been fighting against the Tay Son Nguyen clan since 1778 with the aid of Siam and France, expanding his territory, and finally occupied the north in 1802, succeeding in regaining control of the whole country. In that year, Nguyen Anh ascended to the throne and took the name of Emperor Gia Long. In 1804, he received a Chinese seal and named his country Vietnam.
