A commercial city in southern Nigeria. It is located on the east bank of the Niger River, about 165 km north-northwest of Port Harcourt. It was founded in the 17th century and became the center of the Igbo Kingdom of Onitsha. It is an old market town, and the city has a well-developed road network including New Market Street, Old Market Street, Sokoto Street, and Modebe Street. It is also important as a river port, and in 1965 a bridge linking the east and west sides of the Niger River was completed, expanding its function as a transportation and economic center. Palm oil, palm kernels, cassava, corn, fish, beef, and fruit are distributed here. Industries include steel, textiles, lumber, printing, and the production of records and soft drinks. It was the base of the Biafran War from 1967 to 1970. Population: 328,300 (1991 estimate).
