Samurai Ant - Polyergus samurai

Japanese: サムライアリ(侍蟻) - サムライアリ（英語表記）Polyergus samurai

An insect of the family Formicidae in the order Hymenoptera (illustration). Belonging to the subfamily Formicinae, worker ants are 5-6 mm long, generally black with a slightly gray-brown abdomen, and have thin, sickle-shaped mandibles. After mating flights during the day in early summer, female ants search for and invade the nests of black mountain ants, killing them by biting the queen ants with their sharp mandibles. After a few days, the black mountain ant workers begin to serve the invading samurai ant queen (female), and from then on, only samurai ants are laid in the nest. Samurai ant worker ants lack the ability to work, such as gathering food or raising larvae, so they replenish their labor force by hunting slaves.

膜翅目アリ科の昆虫（イラスト）。ヤマアリ亜科に属し，働きアリの体長は5～6mm，全体に黒色で腹部のみやや灰褐色，大あごは細く鎌状。初夏の日中に行われる婚姻飛行の後，雌アリはクロヤマアリの巣をさがして侵入し，鋭い大あごでクロヤマアリの女王アリをかみ殺す。数日後にはクロヤマアリの働きアリは侵入したサムライアリの女王(雌)アリに仕えるようになり，以後，巣ではサムライアリのみが産みおとされるようになる。サムライアリの働きアリは食物を集めたり幼虫を育てるといった労働能力を欠いているので，奴隷狩りを行っては労働力を補充する。
