[1] [noun] A city that has given up defense or resistance against the enemy. Under international law, attacks are prohibited. It was established in the Hague Convention on Land Warfare in 1907. An undefended city. [2] (Original title: Roma, Cittá Aperta) Italian film. Made in 1945. Directed by Rossellini. Set in Rome under Nazi German occupation during World War II, this film uses documentary techniques to depict the underground resistance movement of citizens and the oppression they endured. It is a pioneering work of neorealism.
