Commonly known as NKK. Founded in 1912 for the purpose of manufacturing steel pipes, later constructed blast furnaces and converters, becoming the second largest integrated steel company after Nippon Steel. With plants in Keihin, Fukuyama, Tsurumi, Shimizu, and Tsu, it is the second largest crude steel producer after Nippon Steel. It is the only one of the five major blast furnace companies to also operate a heavy industry division. Headquarters in Tokyo. Capital in 2001 was 233.7 billion yen, and sales for the fiscal year ending March 2001 were 1.102 trillion yen.
