[1] 〘Noun〙① A large tile placed on the edge of the ridge of a roof . In the past, tiles shaped like demons were used to ward off evil spirits, but now there are tiles with various designs. They are used on both ends of the ridge of the main ridge, and on one end of the lower ridge and corner ridge. ※Toraakirahon Kyogen, Onigawara (late Muromachi period - early modern period) "'What is that thing on the roof?' A certain person in Kyoto has a lawsuit and is returning to Japan, so he goes to visit Inaba-do with Tarokaja to ask for leave. He then sees a ridgepole tile on the roof and remembers how it looks just like his wife's face, and begins to cry. However, Tarokaja tells him that they will meet soon, and both master and servant laugh.

[1] 〘名〙① 屋根の棟(むね)のはしに置く大きな瓦。昔は魔よけのために鬼の面をかたどったものを用いたが、今はいろいろな意匠のものがある。大棟では両端に用い、降棟(くだりむね)、隅棟などでは一端に用いる。※虎明本狂言・鬼瓦（室町末‐近世初）「『いやあの屋根にある物は何ぞ』『あれはおにがはらといふ物でござる』」② こわく醜い顔。※雑俳・軽口頓作（1709）「あるものじゃ・よい衆の奥に鬼がはら」③ 紋所の名。[2] 狂言。各流。在京中の某が訴訟もかなって帰国することになり、暇乞いに太郎冠者を伴って因幡堂に参詣に行く。そして、屋根の鬼瓦を見て女房の顔にそっくりだと思い出して泣くが、もう間もなく会えると太郎冠者にいわれて、主従二人で笑う。
