A deep-sea fish of the family Odontocetiidae in the order Anguilliformes. The body is eel-shaped, with the dorsal and anal fins making up about 2/3 and 1/3 of the rear of the body, respectively. The pelvic fins are located slightly behind the anterior 1/3 of the body. Females have a barbel with a light-emitting organ on the lower jaw and reach a body length of over 30 cm. Males are barbel-less and reach an adult body length of about 5 cm, showing marked sexual dimorphism. There are two rows of light-emitting organs on each side along the underside of the body and ventral surface, from just below the pectoral fin to near the tail fin. In males, the light-emitting organ is the same size as the eye diameter or slightly larger, but in females it is smaller than the eye diameter.
