[1] 〘 noun 〙① A type of tax under the Ritsuryo system. A poll tax levied on men. They were required to pay one of the following items: silk, silk thread, cotton, or cloth. They could also pay products such as iron, hoes, and salt. The amount of the tax varied according to age, with the Shocho paying one-fourth and the Jichou paying one-half of the amount paid by the Seicho. Seicho also paid a side dish called Mitsugi, but this was abolished in 717.
