National Security Act

...Abbreviation for the Central Intelligence Agency. Established by the National Security Act of 1947 along with the Department of Defense (Pentagon) and the National Security Council. In the Cold War situation immediately after World War II, the Central Intelligence Agency integrated the information gathering and intelligence activities that had been carried out separately by the Departments of State, Army, and Navy, and, as an agency directly under the President, was tasked with providing secret information necessary for foreign policy decisions.
