Master Enkinshi

Japanese: 延均師 - えんきんし

Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown. A Gigaku mask maker from the Nara period. His name is inscribed in ink on 11 of the Gigaku masks preserved in Shosoin and Todaiji Temple. Of these, one Shiji mask, nine Suikoju masks from Shosoin, and one Suikoju mask from Todaiji Temple (one mask bag with his name inscribed in ink remains in Shosoin), and one of these, the Shiji mask, has a date of April 9, 752 (4th year of Tenpyo Shoho), and is known to have been used at the Great Buddha Opening Ceremony at Todaiji Temple, which was held on the same day. 奈良時代の伎楽面作者。正倉院並びに東大寺に伝えられる伎楽面のうち11面にその名が墨書される。うちわけは,正倉院が師子児1面,酔胡従9面,東大寺が酔胡従1面で(このほか正倉院に彼の名を墨書する面袋が1点遺る),そのうち師子児面には,天平勝宝4(752)年4月9日の年記も認められ,同日催された東大寺の大仏開眼供養会に使用した面と知られる。同じく開眼供養会の面を制作した相(将)李魚成や基永師にくらべると,作風にはやや神経質とも思える独特の繊細さがうかがえる。<参考文献>石田茂作『正倉院伎楽面の研究』,正倉院事務所編『正倉院の伎楽面』
